The first Bapire Fair was held in Hong Kong in 1932 as

the outcome of a letter addressed by Mra. Amory, the wife of a

former Secretary of State for the Colonies, to Lady Peel, in

which was sug coated, among other thinga, an all-British food day.

Arising from this it was decided to hold en mpire Products Fair,

and in particular to demonstrate the productive capacity of the

Leased Territory of Hong Kong. The Dominion of Cannčia gave

hearty co-operation through the Canadian Trade Commissioner in

Hong Kong (Major V. 5. malos), and Mr. §.7. illiamson organised

the presentation of an Australia and New Sealand Section, Local

import merchants took up the project wit: enthusiast, the Hong

At the final mooting of the Organising Committee of the 1938

Fair, hold on July 19, 1938, the opinion was expressad that

it was desirable, in the interests of spire trade, to make

the Fair an anmal event. This opinion was sported by

several British merchant fire, As the first mir free to an

extent not originally contemplated, it was anticipated that the

next Fair would need to be organi wed on a more elaborate scale,

involving more work than voluntary organisers could do in their

spare time. the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce was there-

fore naked if it would un'ertake the responsibility of organising

the next Fair. The Committee of the Chamber felt some difficulty

in soceding to this request because, on account of the inter
